Local Solomon Islands media recently reported that the island of Taiwan sponsored the “premeditated” anti-government riots in Honiara in an attempt to overthrow the Solomon Islands government and sabotage China-Solomon Islands relations. .

“The acts of violence directed against the democratically elected government of the Solomon Islands, the Chinese-born business community in Honiara and the majority of the peace-loving islanders were basically a premeditated, cold-blooded and cowardly attempt sponsored by Taiwan to overthrow the national government and undermine relations between the Solomon Islands and the People’s Republic of China, ”Solomon Star, a local English media outlet, reported on December 17, citing a writer by the name of George Belau.

The newspaper said the riots resulted in the destruction of the livelihoods of innocent people and the destruction of the Solomon Islands economy, “making it clear to Taiwan and its friends that the rioters are enemies of the whole. from the Solomon Islands, not just China. “

The author listed a few examples, such as the “provocative raising of the Taiwanese flag” by Malaita Prime Minister Daniel Suidani in Malaita on several occasions and the publication of the “Adki communiqué (a clearly anti-Chinese document)”.

The writer also said that Suidani’s “unauthorized” detour to the island of Taiwan in May 2021 was a “step to make plans with Taiwan for future riots / civil coup.”

“China is the only world power that has never invaded another country, never imposed its values and systems on others, demonstrated its ability to cooperate with sworn enemies, not to create new ones. China is the only one. a power that represents development, not destruction. So Malaita and the Solomon Islands, who do you want as a friend? ”asked the writer.

“Certainly not Taiwan – certainly not its agents and rioters. This is China for me and my people,” the writer said.

During the anti-government riots that took place in Solomon Islands in November 2021, the Global Times investigated the riots and found that the riots truly reflected the extent of influence that the United States and the island of Taiwan had over the region given the island nation’s history as a “geopolitical pawn.”

Some Chinese nationals of the island nation contacted by the Global Times also said they strongly suspected that the influence of authorities in the Taiwanese Progressive Democratic Party was behind the riots.

During the days of rioting, Chinese nationals in Solomon Islands suffered heavy losses with their stores destroyed, torched and looted and their personal safety at risk. The Chinatown area suffered the most damage with most stores looted and burnt down.

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare told reporters in November that the crisis “is being influenced and encouraged by other powers.” He further indicated that those forces influencing Malaita – the nation’s main island – are those which “do not want ties to the People’s Republic of China,” according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

In response to a question that many of the protesters were from pro-Taiwan Malaita province and that establishing diplomatic ties with China could be the reason for the riots, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian, said in a routine press conference on November 26, 2021 that establishing diplomatic relations between China and Solomon Islands serves the fundamental and long-term interests of the Solomon Islands, and all attempts to disrupt development normal relations between the two parties are futile.
